It is based on the UK government’s understanding of the current rules for the most common types of travel.
\n\n
The authorities in Belgium set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Belgian Embassy in the UK.
\n\n
Travelling through Calais
\n\n
If you’re travelling through Calais, check the travel advice for France.
\n\n
Passport validity requirements
\n\n
Belgium follows Schengen area rules. Your passport must:
\n\n
\n
have a ‘date of issue’ less than 10 years before the date you arrive – if you renewed your passport before 1 October 2018, it might have a date of issue that is more than 10 years ago, making it invalid for entry to the Schengen area
\n
have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the date you plan to leave the Schengen area (the expiry date does not need to be within 10 years of the date of issue)
\n
\n\n
Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.
\n\n
You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.
\n\n
Dual nationals
\n\n
When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement. See Dual Citizenship.
\n\n
Visa requirements
\n\n
You can travel without a visa to the Schengen area, which includes Belgium, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies if you travel:
\n\n
\n
as a tourist
\n
to visit family or friends
\n
to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events
\n
for short-term studies or training
\n
\n\n
The requirements for working in Belgium are different.
\n\n
If you’re travelling to other Schengen countries as well, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day visa-free limit. Visits to Schengen countries in the 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days. If you overstay the 90-day visa-free limit, you may be banned from entering Schengen countries for up to 3 years.
\n\n
At Belgian border control, you may also need to:
\n\n
\n
show a return or onward ticket
\n
show you have enough money for your stay
\n
\n\n
Staying longer than 90 days in a 180-day period
\n\n
To stay longer, you must meet the Belgian government’s entry requirements. Check which type of visa or work permit you need with the Belgian Embassy in the UK.
\n\n
If you are in Belgium with a residence permit or long-stay visa, this does not count towards your 90-day visa-free limit.
\n\n
Read about entry processes if you live in Belgium.
\n\n
\n
New Schengen entry requirements
\n\n
The European Union’s (EU) new Entry/Exit System (EES) is now being implemented across the Schengen area.
\n\n
This means that when you travel into the Schengen area for short stays, you may need to register your biometric details, such as fingerprints and a photo. There is no cost for EES registration.
\n\n
On your first visit into a Schengen country, you may be asked to register your details at a special booth before proceeding to the immigration desk. Follow directions from your travel operator or the staff at your port of entry. You may also need to provide either your fingerprint or photo when you leave the Schengen area. Children aged 11 or younger will not have their fingerprints scanned but can be required to have their photo taken.
\n\n
You do not need to take any action before you arrive at the border on entry to the Schengen area, but EES may take each passenger extra time to complete so be prepared to wait longer than usual at the border and to allow more time for immigration controls when you depart the Schengen area. If you are departing the Schengen area by plane, allow extra time to reach your departure gate as EES checks may take place before boarding.
\n\n
EES is replacing the previous system of manually stamping passports when visitors arrive in the Schengen area for short stays. You may be asked to input biometric details every time you enter or exit.
\n\n
If you enter the Schengen area through the Port of Dover, Eurotunnel at Folkestone or Eurostar at St Pancras International, any information will be taken at the border before you leave the UK.
\n\n
Your digital EES record is valid for 3 years.
\n\n
Read more information on the EU Entry/Exit System and to understand which countries are in the Schengen area and consult the Belgian Immigration Office Website on EES.
\n\n
If you are long-term resident in a Schengen country, you are exempt from EES in all Schengen countries. The full list of EES exemptions is on the EU’s official Travel Europe website.
\n\n
If you believe you have been incorrectly entered into EES or your record of time spent in the Schengen area is incorrect, approach border officials when you next cross the Schengen border and request a correction. If you are exempt, carry documentation confirming your status. If you believe your time spent in the Schengen area has been recorded incorrectly, raise this with border officials and be prepared to provide supporting evidence if requested.
\n
\n\n
Additional Border Controls in Belgium
\n\n
Belgium has introduced additional entry checks until December 2025. Checks may be carried out on major roads leading into Belgium, motorway car parks, international bus services, international trains and on intra-Schengen flights. Checks may involve verifying travel documents and identification, as well as screening for illegal substances. In Belgium you must carry your passport with you at all times.
\n\n
Border controls at Germany’s land borders
\n\n
There are temporary border controls in place to travel into Germany. The main threat is from extremists linked to Daesh (formerly referred to as ISIL). Previous incidents have included fatal attacks against civilians and law enforcement:
\n\n
\n
on 16 October 2023, 2 people were killed and one seriously injured in a terrorism-related shooting incident in Brussels
\n
in 2022, a police officer was killed and another injured in a suspected terrorist incident in Brussels
\n
\n\n
The Belgian authorities have successfully disrupted various attack plans, making a number of arrests in recent years. The Belgian government has set the national threat level at 3 ‘Serious’. You can expect to see an increased police presence, and additional safety measures may be in place. Be aware of your surroundings and follow the advice of local authorities.
\n\n
Demonstrations and strikes
\n\n
Demonstrations and strikes often take place in major cities, particularly in transport hubs, including international and national train stations, and around the Schuman area (EU quarter) in Brussels.
\n\n
Most demonstrations are peaceful, but there is a risk of unrest or violence. There has also been violence following major sporting fixtures. Demonstrations by farmers can block major roads and delay traffic. Demonstrations in the Schuman area can affect access to the British Embassy and the British Consulate General.
\n\n
Strike action is an ongoing issue that can cause severe travel disruption across the country and affect international travel. Strike action may be announced at short notice and planned strike action may be extended at short notice. Strikes can coincide with demonstrations and protests.
\n\n
For regular updates on any disruption, check local news and follow advice given by your travel provider. If you are in areas where large gatherings are taking place, remain vigilant and move away quickly if there are signs of disorder. Avoid protests, expect delays on some major roads and follow the advice of the authorities.
\n\n
For information on travel in Belgium, visit:
\n\n
\n
\nBelgian Railways (train and metro travel)
\n
\nBrussels, Walloon and Flemish (regional public transport)
\n
HERE map
\n
Brussels-Capital Region Transport and Mobility News
\n
\n\n
For international travel, visit:
\n\n
\n
Brussels Airport Zaventem
\n
Charleroi Airport
\n
Antwerp Airport
\n
\n\n
Security awareness
\n\n
In the event of a security incident or any emergency, or if police carry out security operations at short notice, follow the instructions of the Belgian authorities.
\n\n
You can:
\n\n
\n
find information on the Belgian Crisis Centre website\n
\n
follow the Crisis Centre accounts on X or Facebook to follow official information in the event of a major national incident
\n
sign up to BE-Alert to receive emergency alerts on SMS
\n
look for the official communication and social media channels of local police for the area you are in
\n
\n\n
Crime
\n\n
Protecting yourself and your belongings
\n\n
Theft and pickpocketing are common in crowded areas. Take care of your baggage and passports and beware of any attempts to distract you.
\n\n
Take extra care in major railway stations and on public transport, particularly at night. Thieves, pickpockets and muggers operate in busy areas, and there have been cases of violent robbery. Be aware of your surroundings particularly:
\n\n
\n
at Brussels Gare du Midi/Zuidstation (Eurostar terminal) and Brussels Gare du Nord
\n
on international trains, mainly Paris-Brussels and Amsterdam-Brussels
\n
in busy areas of central Brussels, including Schuman (the EU quarter)
\n
\n\n
Never leave luggage unattended. Luggage has been stolen from the racks at the end of carriages in high-speed trains (TGV and Thalys), usually just before the doors close.
\n\n
Thieves, usually on motorbikes, can break a car window and snatch valuables from the front or back passenger seat when a vehicle is stationary at traffic lights. If you see anything suspicious, report it to local police authorities.
\n\n
Additionally, be aware that drug use may be seen openly in train and metro stations across Brussels.
\n\n
Taxis
\n\n
Only use official, licensed taxis. Confrontations between rival gangs have led to violent incidents including shootings, stabbings, and use of homemade explosives. The risk mostly affects those involved in drug crime, but there is always the risk of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Remain vigilant if you suspect illegal activity. Follow the advice of local authorities.
\n\n
There have been reports of truck and van drivers being approached at parking lots or service stations by organised crime groups and asked to smuggle products to the UK (‘window tapping’). There is no exemption for tourists.
\n\n
Illegal drugs
\n\n
Possession, use, or trafficking of illegal drugs, including cannabis, are serious offences and can lead to a minimum 3-month prison sentence, long jail terms, or heavy fines. You should expect severe penalties even when transiting through the airport.
\n\n
Airports in Belgium have excellent technology and security for detecting illegal items. This is also used to scan the baggage of transiting passengers.
\n\n
Visiting battlefields
\n\n
When visiting WW1 battlefields in north-west Belgium, stay on the footpaths and be cautious if you see anything that looks like shells or munitions.
